The staff of the Gwendolen Kyte School for Girls are an odd assortment of social misfits and eccentric types, some of whom have been at the school for over twenty years. The day before the new term begins they return to a catalogue of catastrophe: a ceiling has collapsed, the staff will have to share their quarters, and there is no food yet because the bills have not been paid from the last term. The Headmistress’s beloved dog is discovered chloroformed and tossed down a disused well. Tension reaches breaking point when a government inspector arrives with anonymous letters defaming the school as outmoded, old-fashioned and unsafe, and the staff unqualified. Who could have betrayed them? And if the school is closed down, where will they go? This is a warm, touching and often very funny play - set in the early 1960s - with excellent roles for actresses.
Ages of actors does not need to match that of the characters: amazing what a spot of make-up and 18 months of earthquakes can do.
Miss Bikerstaff: Dorothy (Deputy Head, matron, secretary). Hardworking, efficient. 40-plus.
Miss Cross: Marjorie (teaches Religious Education). Untidy, nervous, alcoholic. 40-50.

Miss D’Vere: teaches English. Smoker, disappointed and cynical. 30s.
Miss Fisher: Molly (teaches maths). 60 plus.
Mrs Godfrey: Vi (tea-lady cum cook/cleaner). Common, funny, 50-plus.
Miss Kershaw: Kitty (teaches P. E.). Hearty, a woman of the world. 40-plus.

Miss McBain: Phoebe (teaches chemistry). Scottish, waspish, precise in manner and appearance – faded. 50s.
Miss Pink: Rose (teaches music). Prim, fussy, but warm when relaxed. 50-plus.
Mr Smith: Septimus. Her Majesty’s Inspector, nondescript, as determined as a dog after a rat. 35-55.
